Ah maaaan, what a couple of days we had at Toe Rag Studios in Hackney - Check out the control room; absolute audiophile porn. That little gold trophy in the top right hand corner there... see it.... That is an actual freaking grammy.... Splooodge! That thing was won for The White Stripes Elephant Album. We are on holy ground indeed.
We've got to give a MASSIVE shoutout to Luke Oldfield here, Such a dude and a massively talented producer/engineer. All those magical tubes and transisters were lovingly manipulated by his skilled fingers to etch our noises into half a mile of old school reel to reel tape.
On day one we were right up against it. We had only a few hours to carve our desired sound and nail a take for two of the songs because we had a string quintet coming along in the afternoon to add a heap of sparkle and warmth onto those two tunes. Hats off to these guys, it was one of the hottest days of the year and that room was sweety. They'd never played the songs before and they weren't even put off by my rediculous attempt at conducting where I just jumped around infront of them like an idiot. They totally rose to the occassion and added some magic to two of our tracks. Big thanks to Cecily McMahon & Ivano K. Donazzan on Violin, Marie De Bry and Amy Jane Hosken on Viola and Etienne Pavie on Cello. You guys are something else!
We spent the next two days like kids in a toy shop. So much vintage gear to play with, I fell a little bit in Love with a couple of 1960's guitar amps and Jon was pretty bloody happy sat behind a vintage gretch 'roundbadge' drum kit. Gran had her brand new sexy bass guitar and plugged it in to an old Selmer bass amp that was nearly as tall as her. We had that funky East London studio rocking.
The whole project was pretty ambituous, recording on 8 track tape is a very different process to using modern computer based recording studios. There's no tricks here, we just set up our toys and had to capture the energy that was in the room in that moment. We can't wait to bring you the result. The release is set for Friday Septemeber 9th which just happens to coincide with my Birthday. We're throwing a Massive Party at The Finsbury in North London. The Scruff Club, Jannisary and Harry Pane are playing at the party too. Each of these acts are Megasaurouses of the up and coming music scene in London. It promises to be a special and messy evening. Entry is free but it's worth guarenteeing that you'll get in by reserving a free ticket from billeto.
See you there.
